Common Mistakes to Avoid

Setup Mistakes

  • Wrong HowlNET direction - Must connect OUT → IN, not IN → OUT
  • Power to wrong node - Only connect 24V bus power to one node in a chain (Reccomended connecting to Director)
  • Using USB during firmware flash - Disconnect 24V bus power first
  • Exceeding cable length - 100m maximum per system

Camera Mistakes

  • Camera sleep mode enabled - Disable power-saving/sleep for reliable triggering. Wake for a period of time before triggering
  • Forgetting to assign calibration channels - After calibrating, assign channels to camera ports in Leash
  • Using wrong cable type - Use supported camera sync cable (2.5mm TRS)

Multi-Node Mistakes

  • Not connecting USB to Director - USB must connect to first node in chain
  • Insufficient power capacity - Use 2.5A adapter for ~20 nodes
  • Mixed firmware versions - Keep all nodes on same firmware version

Power Issues

Node won't power on

CheckSolution
Power sourceVerify 24V adapter is connected and outlet is live
USB powerTry a different computer USB port or use 24V Bus power adapter instead

Node powers off or reboots unexpectedly

  • Insufficient power: When daisy-chaining, ensure 24V adapter can supply enough current for all nodes (~2W per node)
  • Fuse Protection: Ensure you are not connecting more nodes than is suppored by the Bus Power port (~20 nodes)
  • Cable issues: Check HowlNET cables for visible damage

Getting More Help

If issues persist:

  1. Document the problem:

    • Note firmware version
    • List hardware configuration
    • Describe steps to reproduce
  2. Check connections:

    • Photo of wiring setup can help diagnose
  3. Contact Support:
